World Languages are essential for providing learners with multilingual talents and multi cultural sensitivities which are components of success in a pluralistic society and global economy. Proficiency in World Languages is paramount to improving cross cultural communications and broadening the learner’s professional and personal opportunities, as well. Language education not only stresses communicative development in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, but also a cultural perspective.

The State of New Jersey has identified the following Core Curriculum Content Standards in World Languages. Within the next few years all students will need to demonstrate mastery of the minimal standards in order to graduate from high school.

Core Curriculum Content Standards for World Languages

1. All students will be able to communicate at a basic literacy level in at least one language other than English. 2. All students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between language and culture for at least one world language in addition to English
