Q: I’m beginning to have concerns about my child’s academic progress in one or more classes. What should I do? 

A: Teachers can be reached any time via Mainland Regional email. Please copy your student’s counselor, as well, so that they’re aware of your concerns. You’re also always welcome to reach out to your student’s counselor (School Counseling Office link) Also, encourage your student to reach out directly to their teachers via Teams. 

 

Q: I have had ongoing concerns about my student’s progress and suspect that he/she may need to be evaluated by the child study team. What should I do? 

A: Write a letter or email to the child study team requesting an initial evaluation planning meeting, detailing your concerns in the letter. (Child Study Team) 

 

Q: I would like my child to connect with someone at school to receive support to help with their emotions, relationships, or coping with life circumstances, OR I would like to convey my concerns about the impact of a family/life stressor with someone at school. What should I do? 

A: Feel free to reach out to your child’s school counselor, CST case manager, 504 coordinator, or any member of our Wellness Team. Wellness can be reached by phone or email [email protected]. Please note if you are experiencing an emergency do not wait for a response from support staff, please call 911.

**Meetings are confidential with the same limits to confidentiality as any visit to your school counselor or to supportive a professional. There are limits to confidentiality that exist to maintain safety. Limits to confidentiality include a report to harm self or harm someone else, or a report of abuse or neglect, in these cases we are mandated to report this information for safety of the person reporting and/or others.

**IF the school building is closed and we are on a remote learning plan, the support staff continues to be fully available during school hours to support your child and family. 

 

Q: I am a student and I want to talk with someone at school about my life/anxiety/sadness/loss/class pressure/relationships, etc. What should I do? 

A: We want to help you! Please feel free to reach out to your school counselor, CST case manager, 504 coordinator, or any member of the Wellness Team (Marisa Kane, Dr. Spagone, Georgette Nammour, and Erika Paisley). You can stop into the counseling office any time to connect with one of us and make an appointment, or we’re all on Teams if you’d like to connect with us virtually! IF you’re more comfortable talking with a teacher or coach you know well, they can help you connect with one of the support staff in the building, as well. Be on the lookout for the new Wellness Center – stay tuned!

Q: I am a student and I have thoughts of harming myself. What should I do? 

A: We care about your safety! Please share your thoughts with an adult you trust so that they can help you connect with supports. You are always welcome to reach out to your counselor, CST case manager, 504 coordinator, or any member of the Wellness Team. If you’re having these thoughts outside of school hours and the support staff is not available, please talk with an adult you trust and call Emergency number 911 or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255 or Text HOME to 741741 for free, 24/7 crisis counseling. Student Hotlines and Helplines  

Q: I am a student and I feel frustrated in one of my classes and don’t know what to do to get help. What should I do? 

A: Reach out directly to your teacher through Teams chat and ask them for help. If you are not comfortable reaching out directly, or if you feel like you need more support, feel free to contact your counselor, CST case manager, or 504 coordinator through Teams chat. Even if the school building is closed or you are on a remote learning plan, your teachers and support staff are working every day to help you feel supported and respond to your concerns. 

 

Q: I am a student and I think that one of my friends needs emotional support. What should I do? 

A: You’re always welcome to reach out to your counselor or any member of the Wellness Team by stopping in, sending a Teams message, or calling.  It is so important that we look out for one another and we want to hear if someone else would benefit from our help! Even if the school building is closed, we’re still here and you can reach us any time during school hours.

 

Q: What should I do if I suspect a student is being bullied?

 

      A: We want all students to feel safe in school, and all incidents of suspected bullying are taken seriously. Please click here (Harassment, Intimidation & Bullying – Students – Mainland Regional High School) to find information about Mainland’s Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying policy, contacts, ways to report, and other helpful information contained in the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights. If you have any questions about bullying, please feel free to reach out to Anti-bullying Specialist Marisa Kane ([email protected]), Anti-bullying Coordinator Dr. Kim Spagone ([email protected]), or Assistant Principal  Stephanie Wroniuk ([email protected]). To report an incident of suspected bullying, please complete the HIB Reporting Form (Harassment, Intimidation & Bullying – Students – Mainland Regional High School). You can save the form and email this form directly to Mrs. Wroniuk, or drop it off in the Assistant Principal’s office. The form contains all of the information that will allow Mrs. Wroniuk, Mrs. Kane, and Dr. Spagone to determine how to proceed.

School Wellness Counselor and Student Intervention Counselor as a support for Students: FAQ  

 

Q: How is the School Wellness Counselor and Student Intervention Counselor a support for students?   

A: The School Wellness Counselor and Student Intervention Counselor can meet 1:1 with any students referred by their counselor, teacher, or as a walk-in.  A 1:1 meeting can address such needs as, but not limited to, stress management, self-care, test anxiety, organization & planning, adjustment to school, peer relationships, or requests for referrals for outside supports.  
 

The Wellness counselor will also be a focus developing specific Wellness programs that will be available virtual live, in-person, or available online to review at your convenience. Topics are planned but suggestions or requests are highly encouraged.    

 

Q: What would a 1:1 discussion/meeting look like with the School Wellness Counselor or Student Intervention Counselor, is it confidential?   
 

A: You can stop in to see the School Wellness Counselor and Student Intervention Counselor for any needs you have related to your health & wellness. Meetings are confidential with the same limits to confidentiality as any visit to your school counselor or to supportive a professional in the community. There are limits to confidentiality that exist to maintain safety. Limits to confidentiality include a report to harm self or harm someone else, or a report of abuse or neglect, in these cases we are mandated to report this information for safety of the person reporting and/or others. The School Wellness Counselor or Student Intervention Counselor will address any needs in meetings that are within access to the Wellness Center and if outside sources are more appropriate, will assist with connecting you to the right resources.   

 

Q: How can I contact the School Wellness Counselor or Student Intervention Counselor for an appointment or with questions?   

 

A: You can make an appointment with School Wellness Counselor (SWC) or Student Intervention Counselor (SIC) by reaching out on teams, stopping into the School counseling office for the SWC or the VP's office for the SIC, or a parent can contact for an appointment. If you would like to participate in a meeting or program information will be sent to students and parents with the various ways to access resources and dates for in person meetings (in-person, live online, or via online review). You are always able to stop by our office in guidance or the vice principle's office with your questions. The Wellness Counselor or Student Intervention Counselor are only available during school hours. If you experience an emergency outside of school hours call 911 and or Mobile Response  1-877- 652-7624. 

 

School Wellness Counselor and Student Intervention Counselor as a support for Parents: FAQ  

 

Q: How is the School Wellness Counselor and the Student Intervention Counselor a support for parents?   

 

A: The School Wellness Counselor will develop a monthly newsletter and/or blog to keep parents up to date on what is offered as support for their child. Community resources will also be shared with families to support them outside of school.  

 

There will also be a focus developing specific Wellness programs that will be available virtual live, in-person, or available online to review at your convenience related to parenting topics, topics that were available for students, and topics relevant to support the health & wellness of parents. Topics are planned but suggestions or requests are highly encouraged.

A: Please feel free to call or email with questions or requests for topics or information. If you would like to participate in a meeting or program information will be sent to parents with the various ways to access resources and dates.
