Fragment and Run-on Review                          

Part one

Combine each group of sentences into one by using your combining skills. Write the new sentences on a separate piece of paper. Be sure your punctuation is clear.

1.      I am allergic to dairy foods. I eat cheese anyway.

2.      Lulu is an elegant dancer. Lulu enchants her audience. Lulu is a professional dancer.

3.      Lance heard the phone ring.  Lance answered the phone.

4.      It was raining. It was cold. I went to the beach anyway.

5.      We have a five-course dinner every night. My mom spends much time cooking.

6.      My History project deals with slavery. I have to read many articles. The project must be turned in on Thursday.

Part two

Identify each as a run-on, fragment, or correctly written sentences

1.      Mrs. Colombo grades all her students’ papers.  Every time one is due. 

2.      Each and every day, all of her students beg and plead for less homework but it never works because she needs lots of grades in order to fairly assign a marking period grade. 

3.      Some English teachers research what their students have been learning in other classes. Then come up with creative projects.

4.      The students anxiously approached the classroom. Clinging to their books and pencils.

5.      To give the student caught copying homework a zero. That is the recommended response.

6.      The teachers yelled and the students cowered.

7.      Many friends are very competitive. Which some teachers find surprising.

8.      Jeanie was given a detention.   Because she was late.

9.      Many students struggle in their classes, even though they do all their homework.

10.  A book that is a real page-turner, causing it to be sold out in most book stores.

11.  She has been reading three hours straight, therefore she lost track of time. 

Part three

Rather than using correct punctuation, writers sometimes join sentences with a comma, creating a type of run-on sentence called a comma splice. Identify if you have a correctly written sentence or a comma splice.

12.  Because Martha tripped, Brittany helped her up.

13.  Without ever complaining, the secretary got her boss a cup of coffee first thing every morning.

14.  That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard, they must be kidding.

15.  Close the door, Raul, the hallway is loud.

16.  The bookshelves need to be assembled, then they will be ready for my books.

17.  Both Seth and Dirk, the Weis twins, speak German fluently.

18.  No, you are absolutely wrong, Michelle.

19.  My annoying little brother, Johnny, is supposed to help me with the housework this weekend, then he will wash mom’s car.

20.   I stayed up too late watching television, that is why I am too tired to finish my work.
